High school girls invited to shop "Cinderella's Boutique" for free prom dresses

MENASHA -  People in the Fox Valley are making a difference by helping some young women get ready for one very special night.

"I feel wonderful because it matches me and it's beautiful," said Ally Nelson, a sophomore at Little Wolf High School in Manawa.

The 16-year-old will attend her very first prom in a couple of weeks.

She's one of more than a dozen girls picking out a free dress for the big night.

"It means a lot because you can't go to prom without a prom dress," Nelson said.

Cinderella's Boutique opened its doors to underprivileged teens Saturday. It's all thanks to the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society from Fox Valley Technical College and Community Clothes Closet.

Both organizations realize prom can be expensive and not everyone can afford it.

"I think it's difficult for parents everywhere to not be able to provide their children with the things that they truly wish that they could. Things like prom are the things that these girls walk around and hope that they can go to," said Kelly Kohl, president of Phi Theta Kappa.

A volunteer "Fairy Godmother" helps each girl pick out the right dress.

"She's going to be able to go and not be looked at any different. She's going to be able to enjoy her night along with all her other classmates and these are dreams and opportunities that she will have for a lifetime," said Veronica Sanchez, of of Phi Theta Kappa.

The boutique goes beyond the dresses offering jewelry, shoes and makeup - all donated by the community.

"We also had a donation of corsages and boutonnieres," Khol said.

Savannah Lecher is a high school senior and she says this year's prom is one she'll never forget.

"Because it's my last prom I'll be able to go to so I want to make the best of it," said Savannah Lecher, a senior at New Holstein High School.

Boutique volunteers say every girl deserves the chance to dance and enjoy their special night.

A local hair salon also donated free hairstyles and the girls received gift cards to help pay for dinner.
