TOWN OF PRIMROSE, Wis. (AP) - Two Dane County sheriff's deputies are recovering from stab wounds suffered during an altercation with a suspect who was fatally shot.The deputies responded to a residence north of New Glarus Thursday about 12:30 p.m. and found an older couple with significant injuries suffered in an apparent beating. Sheriff Dave Mahoney says while the deputies were in the home they were attacked and stabbed by the son of the injured couple."They were concerned about other family members in the residence, and so they made entry to do a safety sweep to see if there might be other injured individuals or people in jeopardy," Mahoney said.[caption id="attachment_29444" align="alignleft" width="300"] Deputy Roger Finch and Lt. Brian Hayes (Dane Co. Sheriff's Office)[/caption]Lt. Brian Hayes and Deputy Roger Finch were on an open spiral staircase when they were stabbed in the legs with a knife, the sheriff said. A third deputy shot and killed the man.Mahoney says the injured deputies were taken by helicopter to UW Hospital in Madison where Hayes underwent surgery. Their injuries are not believed to be life threatening.The homeowners who suffered injuries were taken by ambulance to a Madison hospital. Their conditions haven't been released.A new state law requires the fatal shooting to be investigated by an outside agency. It's the second officer-involved fatal shooting in Wisconsin since the law took effect. On Wednesday, a Milwaukee police officer shot and killed a man after a struggle in a popular downtown park.
