BAY OF GREEN BAY - The U.S. Coast Guard is planning to cut ice on northern Green Bay, beginning on Monday.

Plans call for the cutter Mobile Bay to set a track in the ice starting at Rock Island Passage and going west to the entrance of Menominee, Mich. The track will not disturb the ice south of the Wisconsin-Michigan state line, the Coast Guard promises.

Recreational users are asked to plan their activity carefully, be careful near the ice and stay away from shipping channels.

The cutting is being done to create a path for the R/V Sikuliaq, a research vessel for the National Science Foundation. The ship was built at Marinette Marine and is being tested in Lake Michigan. It will eventually make its home in Seward, Alaska.
