KAUKAUNA - It was a quiet afternoon in the southwest neighborhoods of Kaukauna on Monday but that wasn't the case last Friday night and Saturday morning.

That was when 33 mailboxes were damaged according to the Kaukauna Police Department.

Residents like Jeremy Schmitt aren't happy.

"I'm pretty upset. I was, kind of, trying to figure out who the heck would smash a bunch of mailboxes I guess," said Schmitt.

Police said vandals damaged mailboxes on Parkwood Drive, West Ann Street, Fieldcrest Drive, Paul Drive, and Sullivan Avenue.

Cindy Bruecker said she's been living in the neighborhood for the several years and it was the first time her mailbox had ever been damaged.

"You just, you know, you wonder why is it? What's the thrill vandalizing? Ours wasn't as bad...just dented in and the flag was missing," said Bruecker.

Some mailboxes still show signs of damage; from small dents to the plastic on the left side of one mailbox completely missing.

The mail carrier in the area, said when mailboxes are damaged, she's not allowed to leave any mail behind.

Neighbors whose boxes are okay, are also upset.

"It angers me that somebody would get a rush out of doing that and it takes money out of people's pockets," said Mike Kobussen.

Money isn't the only thing some residents are missing.

"We have a 7-year-old who likes to get the mail and doesn't like to come on the road and that's where we got the little door on the back but now she can't get the mail," Schmitt said.

Schmitt said he won't be getting a new mailbox until the summer.
