Boys and Girls Club kids get a crash course at Fox Cities Stadium

APPLETON – Even before kids head back to the classroom, some got a crash course in science, math and baseball at Fox Cities Stadium Wednesday.

Middle school students from the Boys and Girls Club in Appleton and Oshkosh learned how to calculate batting averages and, with on field demonstrations, the science of running bases.

The underlying purpose of the event is to show children the value of science, technology, engineering and math.

Scott Hertting, a high school physics teacher from Neenah, said, “Connecting students to sports which most of these kids will play in some way, shape, or form, to what they learn in school, is just another way to help keep them engaged in school.”

Time Warner Cable’s Connect a million minds is a five-year, $100 million cash initiative to address America’s declining proficiency in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
