State Senator Joe Leibham will not seek a recount in the 6th Congressional District Republican primary, and conceded the race Friday to State Senator Glenn Grothman.

Grothman will now face the Democratic candidate, Winnebago County Executive Mark Harris, in the November general election. The winner succeeds retiring U.S. Rep. Tom Petri.

Grothman defeated Leibham by 219 votes. Given the thin margin of defeat, Leibham would not have had to pay for a recount.

Leibham issued this statement:

“After a review of the official election results and prayerful consideration with my family, I have decided not to seek a recount in the 6th Congressional District election.

I have contacted Senator Glenn Grothman, informed him of my decision and wished him well.

I also want to publicly recognize Representative Duey Stroebel and Mr. Tom Denow for their willingness to be candidates for this important office.

I am humbled to have been a candidate for the 6th District and I am proud of the positive campaign we conducted.  I value the confidence expressed in me by so many voters and truly appreciate the tremendous support offered by so many dedicated volunteers and friends over the past four months.

My team and my family worked extremely hard and for all their efforts and sacrifices, I offer a sincere thank you.

I entered this race because of my serious concern about the direction in which our country is heading and my frustration with our federal government’s inability to address or resolve any of the major issues and challenges that are confronting our country at this time.

America is an unbelievable nation and we deserve better.  I am hopeful that we will see some positive changes real soon.

It is a great honor to serve our area in our representational form of government.  While my specific duties and responsibilities will change over the next couple of months, I pledge to remain an active and involved citizen, always striving to make our community, state and nation a better place to live, work and enjoy life,” Leibhman said.

Grothman issued this statement:

“I want to thank Sen. Leibham for a great campaign. As I said last week, I think all of the candidates in this race ran campaigns to be proud of. We discussed pressing, important issues that our country is facing right now and the need for urgent action in Congress. I am grateful that Sen. Leibham has chosen not to seek a recount in this race and I wish him well in his future endeavors.  I look forward to a great campaign over the coming weeks as the official Republican nominee.”
