MILWAUKEE (AP) – A Milwaukee community is rallying to reclaim a north side neighborhood where a 10-year-old girl was fatally shot in May.

More than 100 members of Sierra Guyton’s community marched near Clarke Street Elementary School on Sunday. The crowd chanted to “let the children play” in opposition to violence in the area.

Guyton was struck by a stray bullet at a school playground and died in July after spending two months on life support. Prosecutors charged 18-year-old Sylvester Lewis with first-degree intentional homicide last week.

Adults at the rally called for stricter gun laws and increased parental involvement.

Lakeesha Collins tells the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel she withdrew her daughters from the school because of the shooting. She says kids in the area shouldn’t be as accustom to violence as they are.
