SUPERIOR – Nearly 100 Wisconsin soldiers are headed to Afghanistan.

The Wisconsin Army National Guard announced that around 95 soldiers from the Superior-based 950th Engineer Company will deploy to Afghanistan this fall. The unit will deploy to eastern Afghanistan to support the Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Resolute Support.

The 950th specializes in route clearance and combating threats posed by explosive devices.

The upcoming deployment will be the unit’s first to Afghanistan. It deployed to Iraq in 2003 and 2010.

The Wisconsin National Guard is planning a sendoff ceremony for the unit and will announce the details as the deployment draws near.
