Bill Turnquist stepped down as West De Pere’s head football coach after last season, but apparently it didn’t mean he would never coach again.

Turnquist spent 39 seasons as the Phantoms leader and this season he will assist at Bay Port under coach Gary Westerman, who is pleased to have a coach with 303 career wins on his side.

“He is positive and his energy is unmatched,” Westerman said. “Great addition; the kids have responded extremely well. He is an example for all of us as coaches to follow. Great coach, better person.”

Turnquist will coach running backs and help coordinate the offense. Bay Port opens its season Aug. 22 at De Pere.
