GREEN BAY – The Meyer Theatre says it has a new company signed on to move into its second floor.
It’s part of the theatre’s expansion and a groundbreaking ceremony was held Friday morning.
The former Daily Planet Restaurant will be known as ‘Backstage at the Meyer.’
The space hasn’t been used in almost 15 years. But that’s all about to change.
The first floor will include an entertainment venue.
“There will be a small performance stage. There will be a meeting area and breakout space. It will be the perfect area for an intermission at a Meyer Theatre Show or for a pre-show event,” said Jeff Mirkes, Meyer Theatre board president.
The second floor will include additional office space for Breakthrough Fuel. It helps other companies reduce their fuel cost, consumption, and emissions.
“We think culturally it fits very well for the type of people we attract which is really knowledge workers, bright talented people that like the downtown Green Bay area,” said Doug Mueller, Breakthrough Fuel president.
Breakthrough Fuel chose to expand into the Backstage at the Meyer building because the two buildings are in walking distance.
“We knew about a year and a half ago, which was much faster than we thought, that we were going to need additional space,” Mueller said.
The 6,200 square foot area will include open and individual workspaces for about 30 people.
There will also be a rooftop deck with a view of the downtown district.
“You look at what our goal is here and that’s to have a city that retains and attracts talent and [there’s] no better place to do that than in a place that promotes talent and we have that here with the Meyer and obviously talented employees with Breakthrough Fuel,” said Jim Schmitt, Green Bay’s mayor.
Construction is expected to wrap up by February 14.
“That’s the 85th anniversary of the Meyer Theatre,” Mirkes said.
The expansion will also include maintenance and improvements to the theatre.
The construction project has an estimated cost of $3 million.
Much of that money has been donated as a part of the theatre’s $4.5 million capital campaign.
