APPLETON – A Lawrence University percussion ensemble drummed up a championship at a recent international competition.
The Lawrence University Percussion Ensemble won the Percussive Arts Society’s 2014 World Percussion Ensemble Competition. School leaders say the annual competition is open to high school and college ensembles performing non-Western, percussion-based music.
This was LUPÉ’s second victory under professor Dane Richeson in a PAS international competition, with the first coming in 1995.
LUPÉ is made up of three groups: the Sambistas, a Brazilian drumming corps, Kinkaviwo, a Ghanaian drum/dance group, and Tambotoké, an Afro-Cuban group.
The ensemble is scheduled to be among the featured performers at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention this November in Indianapolis.
