MARINETTE COUNTY – A terrifying chase through Marinette County ended with a lone gunman dead.
It happened after he allegedly shot at a couple’s SUV and a deputy’s squad car. The incident began Thursday afternoon near Wausaukee, and ended nearly 35 miles away in the town of Goodman.
Shattered glass and bullet holes grazed a Jeep from Illinois, driven by an unsuspecting couple en route to the Upper Peninsula with their dog.
“Shortly before three in the afternoon we received a call into dispatch of a car that was northbound on (Highway) 141 just south of Wausaukee that had been shot at,” described Marinette County Sheriff Jerry Sauve.
Sauve says a 35-year-old Green Bay man took aim at the SUV twice with a 9 mm handgun.
“This is the first shot. It went right towards where the passenger was sitting in this vehicle. Struck the windshield and wiper there,” Sauve said, showing FOX 11’s Kelly Schlicht where the bullets hit the vehicle. “He came off [the road] and then came back behind them. He fired off another shot and this goes all the way through into the inside of the vehicle.”
Deputies recovered that slug from the back seat.
Sauve says the couple didn’t know their attacker.
“They said they saw the vehicle first further south, down by Crivitz. But then when they got up by Wausaukee, this happened. But there was no apparent reason for it to happen,” he said.
Sheriff’s deputies caught up with the suspect around Pembine, where he turned onto U.S. Highway 8. He shot at deputies. Then he eventually turned down Shrine Road in Goodman.
Deputies called for backup on this dusty dirt road.
“When they got out of the armored unit, there was no response from the suspect who was face down on the ground near the vehicle. He was down a bit into the woods through some trees. And they approached him and it appeared he had a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head,” said Sauve.
The sheriff’s department says it wants to know what led up to this rare type of drive-by shooting in what’s normally a tranquil summer retreat.
Deputies say the couple from Illinois were shaken up by the attempted shooting, but otherwise unharmed.
