Jay DeMerit has played his last soccer game.

The former Bay Port soccer star retired from pro soccer this week after he suffered a torn ankle ligament June 7. DeMerit, 34, was playing in Major League Soccer for Vancouver.

In a letter posted on Vancouver’s website Thursday, DeMerit said, “Even if I was to get back to a level where I could potentially play again, I would be putting at risk the reputation that I have spent so many years trying to create, and I won’t do that. I’ve never taken the field just because I can. I’m either all in or all out.”

DeMerit played for Vancouver since 2011 and was a member of the U.S. World Cup team in 2010.
