GREEN BAY – As the Fourth of July weekend inches closer, a reminder that 11,000 Americans were burned by fireworks last year, a 30% increase from the year before.
A local doctor advises caution for anyone that insists on lighting off their own fireworks, particularly children.
Dr. Jocko Zifferblat from St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center says, “make sure children are not unattended. Children should not be using the fireworks and remember these are hot and they are explosives, so you don’t want to have your body parts on them”
“You want to be a distance away, even sparklers, even though you think they are really benign and not a big deal, they can get to 2,000 degrees.” says Zifferblat.
Last year, among those injured by fireworks, 8 people died.
