GREEN BAY – An older form of communication is being celebrated this week: Amateur ham radios.
The Green Bay Mike & Key club gave a demonstration Sunday.
Ham radios have been used since the 1900s as a way of communicating over shortwave signals.
The Green Bay group has an estimated 100 members.
Operators say the radios are a viable source of communication in case of an emergency.
“We use this experience to train ourselves to be able to provide communications during times of disaster, and there’s no other power available, we operate out of here. For example, right now we’re operating off of battery operations,” said emergency coordinator David Catalano.
There are an estimated 154 thousand amateur radio operators in the United States.
