Former Gambler picked in NHL Draft

NHL DRAFT SCHMALTZ-VO

GREEN BAY — Another Green Bay Gamblers alum heard his named called in the NHL Draft. The Chicago Blackhawks picked former Gambler Nick Schmaltz in the first round, 20th overall.

The Blackhawks traded up with San Jose in the first round to nab Schmaltz, whose brother Jordan was picked 25th overall in the 2012 draft. Schmaltz played 3 seasons with the Gamblers, totaling 37 goals and 119 points. He is committed to play college hockey at the University of North Dakota.

Schmaltz was listed as a forward with the Gamblers, but projects as a center in the NHL. His NHL.com bio says his favorite pro hockey team is, conveniently, the Blackhawks, and his favorite player is Patrick Kane.

According to the Gamblers’ website, Schmaltz is the 33rd player from their team picked in the NHL Draft.
