Ridgeway Country Club (Neenah) golf pro Ryan Helminen entered the final day of the PGA Professional National Championship in third place and in contention to win the tournament.
But after Helminen carded a 78 his hope of winning the tournament was gone, so he had to turn his attention to qualifying for the PGA Championship. Helminen was in a six-way tie for 16th place and the top 20 places in the tournament are awarded spots in the PGA’s final major of the season.
Helminen, 39, needed a playoff to reserve his spot and he suceeded as he and 19 other competitors will play at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kent., Aug. 7-10.
Helminen’s scores for the four days were, 68-73-74-78.
