MADISON (AP) – A former University of Wisconsin football recruit has been found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman during a visit to the Madison campus last December.

Dominic Cizauskas, 18, a linebacker from Mukwonago, was convicted of third-degree sexual assault by a jury in Dane County Circuit Court Wednesday night.

Jurors deliberated about five hours after hearing testimony from Cizauskas and the woman he was accused of sexually assaulting in her dorm room. Their accounts differed on whether their encounter was consensual. The two were acquainted and both testified they had consensual sex several times in the past. The woman testified that she wasn’t interested in Cizauskas after she began her freshman year at UW-Madison.

Assistant District Attorney Rachel Sattler told jurors that it didn’t matter if the two had a relationship in the past, the woman did not want to have sex with him that night and it was her right to say no, the State Journal reported.

Cizauskas’ lawyer, Tim Verhoff, said the woman erased a few key text messages between her and Cizauskas, which were later recovered by police, indicating that she wanted Cizauskas to come to her room.

“This was a consensual act,” Verhoff said. “It’s something she might have felt bad about afterward.”

Cizauskas faces up to five years in prison when he’s sentenced in about two months.
