DE PERE – Wisconsin’s first lady Tonette Walker presented the Wisconsin Heroes Award Thursday afternoon.
It was presented to a volunteer from De Pere who has been giving his time for more than 20 years.
“It was a complete surprise. I had no idea anything like this was going to happen,” said Elton Peterson.
Peterson was beaming when he received the award.
Peterson has been an active volunteer in the community for decades and says he loves to give back.
“It always is a good satisfaction, especially when the older people say we would never know how much we appreciate it, all the volunteers,” said Peterson.
Elton keeps busy by delivering meals for the De Pere Community Center, giving rides to clients of the Red Cross, and playing as a volunteer musician in three community bands.
Walker says the award is a wonderful chance to shine the spotlight on these deserving residents.
“It’s important because they need to be recognized. They don’t want to be recognized, we know that. But it’s an opportunity for us to really say, ‘thank you,’” Walker said.
Each month one outstanding Wisconsin resident is recognized with a hero award.
The first lady visits them and presents the award.
