MADISON — Laconia’s quest for its first state softball title was denied Saturday, mainly because of Arcadia pitcher Taylor Haines.
Haines struck out 17 and allowed two hits as the Raiders completed a 30-0 season with a 1-0 win over Laconia in the Division 3 state softball championship game at Goodman Diamond.
“It was a pitcher’s duel all the way through,” Laconia coach Scott Ritzema said. “They got their one run in the seventh and we got real close in the end. I couldn’t be more prouder of my girls. They did an amazing job this season. I couldn’t expect anything more than they gave.”
Laconia freshman pitcher Kayla Schwebke was also impressive, throwing a two-hitter and striking out nine.
Laconia ends its season 21-5 and with its second silver trophy. The Spartans were also runner’s-up in 2009.
