Wisconsin WWII veterans honored at state Capitol

MADISON – Veterans were honored Friday at the state Capitol building.

The D-Day ceremony honored all Wisconsin veterans who died in the battle. Two survivors were in attendance.

“We were under small arms and mortar fire, but we managed to get by without any casualties I think,” said Normandy veteran Ray Nelson. “We went on and fought through the hedgerows over there. The hedgerows was built up with rocks and dirt and trees so it was very slow going, I thought the war will never be over at this rate.”

About 320,000 men and 9,000 women from Wisconsin served in the armed forces during World War II. More than 83,000 of them were killed.
