Officer involved with DARE retires after 20 years

GREEN BAY – A Brown County officer dedicated to drug abuse education received special recognition Wednesday night.

For the past 20 years, Kevin VandenHeuvel has been part of the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program, or DARE.

Wednesday was his final graduation with the program. It took place at Martin Luther King Elementary School.

VandenHeuvel says he wanted to be a teacher growing up, but after his twin brother decided to go that route, he decided to take a different path.

He chose law enforcement, and got to have the best of both worlds. VandenHeuvel says it’s been a rewarding 20 years.

“Staying with it for 20 years is kind of unusual but once I got into it I got to meet a lot of really good teachers and I learned how to interact with kids in a way that was really effective,” said Officer VandenHeuvel.

VandenHeuvel started in 1994 as a Brown County DARE officer. He will officially retire in December.
