GREEN BAY – If you get a call from someone claiming to be from the Brown Co. Sheriff’s Office Warrants Division, it’s a fake.
The sheriff’s office says it has received complaints about the fraudulent calls. Citizens are reporting that a man is calling and identifying himself as “Deputy James Thomas.” The man, who has a southern accent, tells the person he or she has fines for not showing up for jury duty. The fines could lead to an arrest warrant, the caller claims.
The caller instructs the person to take care of the fines by buying a prepaid card from Walgreens and calling back with the card’s personal identification number.
County officials say they would never call and request any kind of personal information or payment over the phone. Anyone who receives a call like this is asked to hang up the phone and call the sheriff’s office at (920) 391-7450.
Questions about arrest warrants in Brown County can be answered by the Clerk of Courts office at (920) 448-4155.
