MILWAUKEE (AP) – The Medical College of Wisconsin will play a leading role in a new $30 million study of sports concussions announced by President Barack Obama.

The study is a collaboration between the NCAA and the Department of Defense. The study will include significant work by Michael McCrea, director of brain injury research at the medical college.

McCrea will direct the Advanced Research Core, which will study concussions and head injuries using head impact sensor technology, advanced neuroimaging and detailed clinical studies. McCrea’s work on concussions spans two decades and involves more than 10,000 student athletes in southeastern Wisconsin.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports researchers at the Indiana University School of Medicine and the University of Michigan also will work on the new national study.
