Green Bay Bullfrogs prepare for their Tuesday night season opener.

GREEN BAY – The Green Bay Bullfrogs are back on the field on Tuesday night, opening their season under new management, and with new renovations to Joannes Stadium.

The team will now be led by veteran manager Darrell “Skip” Handelsman, who spent time coaching in the Northwoods League in Madison a decade ago.

“We’re excited,” said Handelsman. “The guys are excited to get going. They just got into town this weekend, so it’s not just the anticipation to get nervous the night before. We have a lot to do in a short amount of time, but we’re excited to get going and play baseball which is what these guys are here for.”

The players in the Northwoods League are from colleges all across the U.S., from Division I to Division III, and are some of the top players in the nation.

The goal is for interaction with the fans.

“If a fan wants something signed, they will get it. If they want 10 things signed, they’ll get that too,” said Handelsman. “We want this to be a great family experience.”

The players will feel like family, playing 72 games in 75 days this summer together.

The team also has a new ownership group, led by team general manager Liz Kern, and the new owners wasted no time putting in upgrades to the stadium. The group sunk $70,000 of new features after holding listening sessions with fans to find out what would enhance the experience.

Some of the renovations include new pro-style netting behind home plate to replace the chain link fence, expanded concessions, and a new entrance that opens up right into the parking lot down the left field line.

“It’s very exciting, absolutely,” said Liz Kern, the new general manager of the team. “We came here and there was snow on the ground, now it’s a balmy 70 degrees, the ball park’s looking good, getting it ready to go for tomorrow.”

The Bullfrogs will also have a wrestling legend Mick Foley in attendance Tuesday night for their opening ceremonies. Game time is 7:05.
