GDW House Call: Kidney Stones

Dr. Tom Schlueter, a Prevea Health Urologist, paid us a house call on Good Day Wisconsin to talk about kidney stones.

According to the National Institute of Health, one in 11 people have had a kidney stone.

Dr. Schlueter explained how kidney stones are formed, what causes them, what foods to avoid and how much water to drink to avoid them!

He also shared a video of a kidney stone being “blasted” by a laser.

The most common cause of kidney stones is not drinking enough water. Dr. Schlueter says you should drink enough water so your urine is light yellow or clear like water (about 8 to 10 glasses a day).

Too much oxalate may cause kidney stones in some people.

Foods high in oxalate include:

*Beer

*Coffee

*Dark green vegetables, such as spinach

*Oranges

*Soda
