GREEN BAY – The U.S. Coast Guard station in Green Bay held its fifth annual open house to help mark National Safe Boating Week.
Boaters could have a safety check of their vessels, and also take a look inside the Coast Guard patrol boat.
Event organizers say they hope to promote the use of life jackets for those who head out on boats.
“If you end up in the water, you don’t have to try and swim and try to keep yourself up until someone can come and rescue you,” said Senior Chief Kyle Dupree in promoting life jacket use. ” It’s going to save your life until someone can come rescue you.”
Coast Guard officials say drowning remains the primary cause of death in boating accidents. Wisconsin ranks seventh nationwide for boating fatalities.
