Burglary closes school in Oshkosh

OSHKOSH – Oshkosh police believe they have a church burglary suspect on camera.

His alleged crime caused classes to be canceled at the church’s school Wednesday.

The burglary at Grace Lutheran happened late Tuesday night.

But police hope the public can help identifying the suspect.

Oshkosh police say someone at the church noticed the burglary early Wednesday morning.

“One of the employees here at Grace Lutheran Church had come, seen that somebody had entered the building and when police arrived they had seen that a safe had been tipped over and a donation box had been broken into,” said Public Information Officer Joe Nichols.

School officials, who declined to comment Wednesday, canceled classes for the day as students began to arrive.

“We were still in the process of investigating the incident and so the school just decided to cancel school while we were here collecting bits of evidence and that type of thing,” said Nichols.

According to the school’s Facebook page school will resume as normal Thursday.

Nichols says the suspect entered through a door at the church that was not properly locked. Nichols says there is little damage other than the safe being knocked over. He says the suspect, wearing a hooded sweatshirt and baseball cap was caught on video walking the hallways.

“These are crimes of opportunity and thieves, burglars will go around and they will pull on doors, whether it’s car doors, business doors, anything, even church doors nowadays and they’ll pull on them and if they’re open they’ll go in and investigate what they can take.”

He says the suspect stole money from a donation box at the church, but police aren’t sure yet how much was taken.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Oshkosh Police Department at (920) 236-5700.
