KIEL – The U.S. Army says it is continuing its investigation into the death of Sgt. Heidi Ruh.
The Kiel native’s body was found Friday by a civilian at a running track at Camp Bondsteel in Kosovo, according to an Army spokesperson.
The military told Ruh’s family that she was fatally shot while on base. No other details about what happened are being released at this time.
Ruh spent 2012 deployed in Afghanistan. She was based out of Fort Hood, Texas, where she survived a shooting rampage by another Army officer in 2009. She worked in a medical unit, repairing surgical machines and volunteered to go to Kosovo in February.
Ruh’s family plans a public memorial service once her body returns to the area.
Along with her parents, Ruh is also survived by two sons, ages 8 and 11.
