GREEN BAY (AP) – Shipping through the Port of Green Bay was down in April.

The Press-Gazette Media reports the Port of Green Bay saw five ships transit the port last month, down from 15 in April 2013. That dropped the amount of cargo moving through by 70 percent.

The port handled nearly 58,000 tons of cargo in April, down from nearly 196,000 tons the previous April.

The first ship entered the port April 18, about three weeks late. Heavy ice on the Great Lakes coupled with a cold spring slowed the start of shipping season.

Dean Haen, of the Brown County Port & Resource Recovery Department, says what happened in April was due to weather not lack of economic activity and other cargo will come.
