GREEN BAY – One of downtown Green Bay’s busier intersections will soon be seeing even more action.
New development is planned for three out of the four corners of the intersection of Washington and Walnut streets.
The head of Prevea Health, Dr. Ashok Rai, says he can’t think of a better place to open a clinic.
“There’s no better corner actually in Green Bay with Schreiber just down to my right as well,” said Rai.
Prevea Health celebrated the opening of its Washington Street Health Center, just before projects are about to break ground on either side of it.
“We always knew this was a good corner, but to really have something that is sustainable here, we passed on some other things, restaurants, bars,” said Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt. “A clinic really speaks well for the direction of the downtown.”
On the corner south of the clinic will be Backstage at the Meyer. City officials say the $3 million expansion of the Meyer Theatre will begin this month.
“A place for smaller venues and for banquet space,” said Schmitt.
Kiddy corner to the Meyer, where Nicolet Bank currently has a parking lot, will be Metreau. The $17 million, 107-unit apartment building, is scheduled to break ground at the end of the month.
“It’s going to bring more opportunities for people to live in the downtown,” said Schmitt.
With three of four corners seeing change, the Bellin Building is the only part of this intersection maintaining status quo. It turns one hundred next year.
“It’s not just all business or it’s not just all entertainment,” said Schmitt. “It’s got to be a combination of the arts and to have healthcare as part of it, education, as well as quality living and businesses, that’s what makes a healthy, sustainable downtown and that’s what we have down here.”
If the area keeps growing, Prevea says it will as well.
“We hope to expand this site, so more and more employers can use it as their near site clinic, dedicated just for their employees,” said Rai. “That’ll be coming here in the near future.”
Prevea’s new clinic is already servicing patients with walk-in and urgent care services.
Backstage at the Meyer is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
The Metreau Apartments are scheduled to be ready in about a year.
