MADISON (AP) – Authorities have identified the man who was shot and killed by a Dane County deputy last week after he stabbed two other deputies in the legs.
The medical examiner’s office says 50-year-old Dean A. Caccamo of Primrose apparently died of a single gunshot wound.
Sheriff Dave Mahoney says Caccamo was wearing a bullet-resistant vest when he attacked the deputies Thursday at the home he shared with his mother and stepfather. The elderly couple had been severely beaten.
The deputies fired bean bags and also tried using stun guns, pepper spray and batons to try to apprehend him. Deputy James Kelley eventually shot him.
Mahoney says Caccamo had a history of mental illness, and that authorities had previous contact with him.
The two deputies who were stabbed are expected to recover.
