Mental Health Awareness Month event in Appleton

APPLETON – Helping people with mental health disorders was the focus of an event in Appleton Thursday morning.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month.

Discussion at the event focused on removing the stigma of mental illness that can stop some from seeking treatment.

A Lawrence University student said that stigma impacted her before she was diagnosed with depression last year.

“I would urge people to always keep it in the back of your thoughts. A lot of our everyday interactions happen so quickly, and it’s so easy to forget that behind the masks we present, sometimes there’s a lot of pain, and there’s a personal story behind every interaction,” said event speaker Anastasia Skliarova.

Republican Governor Scott Walker also attended the event. He said he put an extra $30 million in the state’s current budget for mental health services.
