Former Packers player raises awareness about suicide

OSHKOSH – A Green Bay Packers Hall of Famer joined hundreds of people in Oshkosh on Saturday to raise awareness about suicide.

Chester Marcol, who was kicker for the Packers for nine seasons, is the namesake for the “Chester Marcol 5k Run/Walk for Suicide Awareness.”

The event helps bring attention to an issue that has personally affected Marcol’s life. His father and youngest brother both died by suicide.

In 1986, Marcol tried to take his own life. He has since dedicated himself to giving hope to others, who find themselves in similar situations.

“The number one priority in my heart is to provide hope for people who feel hopeless, who feel sad, who feel depressed,” said Marcol.

The walk raised money for local organizations in the Oshkosh area. It also provided people with information about mental health and suicide prevention.

This was the fourth year for the annual event.
