Former US Senator honors area teachers

GREEN BAY – Dozens of students and teachers from all over Wisconsin received some special recognition today.

Selected students and teachers received Herb Kohl Educational Foundation scholarships and fellowships.

The annual banquet took place today at Red Smith Elementary in Green Bay.

Scholarships are given to students who have demonstrated leadership, citizenship and community service.

Former U.S. Senator Herb Kohl was on hand to give out the awards.

Kohl says it’s important to put education on the forefront.

“Education is the most important part of our society getting people ready for the next generation if we do that really well then our future is pretty well assured and if we don’t do it well then we’re in big trouble,” said Kohl.

The foundation has provided more than eight million dollars to Wisconsin teachers, students and school. It annually awards 190 scholarships and 100 fellowships throughout the state.
