FOND DU LAC – A Fond du Lac police dog seriously injured in a deadly 2011 shooting is retiring.
K-9 Grendel has been partnered with Officer Ryan Williams, who was also injured the same standoff, for the past eight years.
Fellow officer Craig Birkholz was killed in the shooting.
Grendel and Williams both returned to duty months after being injured and have worked together ever since.
Fond du Lac Police Chief Bill Lamb released the following statement Friday, it reads in part:
“Every member of the City of Fond du Lac Police Department feels very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work alongside Officer Ryan Williams and his partner, K-9 Grendel. They have obviously been a remarkable K-9 team and have served the department and our community with extraordinary distinction. Their arrests, seizures, and apprehensions have, in and of themselves, made for an excellent career together.”
The Fond du Lac Police Department will hold a retirement ceremony for Grendel on Tuesday, April 8 at 2 p.m. It is open to the public.
