Area post office may be named for fallen soldier

DE PERE – A post office in De Pere could soon be named for a fallen soldier from Green Bay.

On Wednesday, the U.S. House approved the change to rename the building the Cpl. Justin D. Ross Post Office. The effort to rename the building is the work of U.S. Rep. Reid Ribble (R-8th District), who introduced the bill earlier this month.

The 22-year-old Ross died March 26, 2011, when his Army unit was attacked in Afghanistan.

Ribble says he chose Ross to be honored because he was the first service member from the 8th Congressional District to die in combat after Ribble took office. Ribble says, even though the building will have Ross’ name on it, the legislation also honors other serice members from Ribble’s district who have died since he took office. They are Sgt. Paul J. Atim of Green Bay, Staff Sgt. Matthew D. Hermanson of Appleton, Staff Sgt. Garrick L. Eppinger Jr. of Appleton and Staff Sgt. Jordan L. Bear of Elton.

The name change still needs to be approved by the Senate and President Barack Obama.
