TOWN OF CALEDONIA – A man and a dog are dead after an early morning fire in Waupaca County.
It happened at a home on Bellin Road in the town of Caledonia.
Charred debris is what’s left of Wayne and Joyce Tesch’s house. A fire broke out in the home around 3:30 Tuesday morning and 82-year-old Wayne Tesch never made it out.
“She comes knocking on the door and I’m like what’s going on and the pounding and the doorbells are ringing and my head is going, so I open the door and she is going, ‘Call the fire department the house is on fire,’” said neighbor Ralph Much.
Much and his wife live across the street. Much says when his neighbor came knocking at the door he saw flames shooting from the house.
“About that time it exploded and I saw what it was and she was like I gotta go back but she didn’t go very far before she came back.”
Much says the couple were good neighbors who often enjoyed going to car shows.
“How many cars he’s got, four, five or six of them I don’t know but he would go to a lot of car shows with them.”
The Waupaca County Sheriff’s Department says Wayne Tesch died of smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but the sheriff’s department says it is not suspicious.
Joyce Tesch was also treated for smoke inhalation at New London Family Medical Center Tuesday morning and released.
