MADISON – A state representative from our area wants to be the next secretary of state.
Republican Garey Bies of Sister Bay announced in January that he wouldn’t seek re-election for his Assembly seat after serving seven terms.
If he wins the secretary of state race, he may only hold the job temporarily. Republicans are drawing up bills to eliminate the office by 2019.
Bies is hoping to work with legislators to change that.
“If they want to move in the direction of eliminating the office, I’d work closely with the Legislature, or I would try to enhance and restore the credibility and bring some purpose and meaning to the job,” said Bies.
Democrat Doug La Follette is the long-time secretary of state. He has held the position for four decades.
La Follette recently announced he will run again.
