Fond du Lac remembers Officer Craig Birkholz

FOND DU LAC – Somber friends, family and police officers gathered in Fond du Lac Thursday.

They gathered to remember Police Officer Craig Birkholz who was killed during a shootout with a gunman three years ago.

Dozens of people gathered around the police and fire memorial in Fond du Lac’s Hamilton Park.

The police chief says the department will never forget Birkholz and that the annual memorial also helps with healing.

“It’s obviously a very somber day; it’s hard to believe that three years have passed. And while there has been a significant amount of healing, the department’s steadily moved forward but nonetheless there are some wounds that time will not heal,” said Fond du Lac Police Chief Bill Lamb.

Officer Ryan Williams and his police dog were wounded in that shooting. Both of them have returned to duty with the department.
