Xavier’s Matt Ferris had a record-setting season as a quarterback but the senior will pass on a college career in football and accept an preferred walk-on offer from Wisconsin to play basketball.
Ferris was named the Eastern Valley Conference player of the year this season after leading the Hawks to an 18-5 record and the EVC title. Ferris, 6-5, averaged 14.8 points per game and did most of his damage from the perimeter where he made 56 of 130 3-point shots for 43 percent.
Ferris was named the FOX 11 Large Division offensive football player of the year and the Associated Press’ state player of the year this past season after setting records with 3,949 yards, 50 touchdown passes and touchdowns in a game with eight. He led Xavier to Level 4 of the playoffs.
Ferris is the second local player to accept a walk-on offer from Wisconsin in the last year. Former Green Bay Southwest forward Aaron Moesch walked on this season and is redshirting.
