Germantown man scares some by carrying guns

GERMANTOWN – Germantown police say they confronted a man this weekend whose actions were shocking to some, but not illegal.

“Put a shotgun on my back and a pistol on my hip and I went for a walk,” said William Polster.

Police talked with Polster after receiving several calls from resident who were concerned about Polster’s intentions.

“The subject was polite he was not confrontational,” said Germantown Police Chief Peter Hoell. “He did not want to identify himself. The officers were confident he did not do anything illegal. He did not violate any ordinances and he was free to go.”

Police say they didn’t have a problem with Polster exercising his right to open carry, but they did have an issue with manner in which he did it.

“People`s perceptions were that this might be a problem they feared for people’s safety,” said Hoell.
Polster said he was trying to prove a point.

“If guys see it they might feel more comfortable to arm themselves and be able to defend themselves if the need arises.”

Although the incident was jarring for some, the police chief did find something positive in the situation.

“I think it needs to be talked about,” said Hoell.
