WABENO – A 40-year old man is severely injured after authorities say he was beaten and left in the woods for 21 hours. It happened in Forest County.
Six people have been arrested, including two juveniles.
The man is still in the hospital. Police say he may have to have a leg amputated.
He was apparently held for two days in a home in Wabeno.
Two ATV riders found him Wednesday afternoon near Crandon, about 20 miles away. The Forest County Sheriff’s Department is still trying to sort out what exactly happened. So are neighbors, like Bonnie Harris.
“I’m shocked,” said Harris.
Harris didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary this week on her street in Wabeno.
“Not a thing. And I never heard a thing last night,” she said.
But just three houses down, investigators say a 40-year-old man was strangled, suffocated and held captive.
The man told deputies he was beaten after he spanked an 11-year-old girl, but the girl’s mother says her daughter told her the man had touched her bottom.
Whatever did happen, led to a violent reaction.
The girl’s mother described to authorities how the man was repeatedly beaten, urinated on and kicked in the groin. The woman never said whether she took part in the alleged assaults.
She also said, at one point, the man ran out the front door, but did not get far.
Neighbors admit the house is generally quiet.
“Just hanging around by their house every once in a while when I come home from work,” said Harris.
Authorities say they found iron shackles and hand cuffs in the home.
They are recommending charges of attempted homicide, strangulation and false imprisonment against the adults.
There’s no word on what charges the two juveniles could face.
The four adults were jailed on bonds ranging from $25,000 to $100,000. Their initial court appearances are scheduled for next Wednesday.
One of the suspects told police the man recently moved into the Waubeno home after meeting the 11-year old’s mother on a dating website.
It’s unclear if the man will face charges for anything he allegedly did to the girl. FOX 11 tried to talk with investigators. They refused to comment.
