MARINETTE – Marinette Marine will build at least two more Littoral Combat Ships for the U.S. Navy.

The ships are part of the Navy’s nearly $700 million contract with the company. These will be the seventh and eighth LCS built by Marinette Marine. The Navy wants Marinette Marine to eventually build at least 10 ships, with more possible in the future.

However, those future ships could be in danger. President Barack Obama’s latest budget proposal includes cutting funding for the LCS program.  That plan still needs to be passed by Congress. Wisconsin Sens. Tammy Baldwin (D) and Ron Johnson (R) oppose cutting the funding.

About 2,000 jobs in Marinette are directly linked to the LCS program.
