GREEN BAY – An online effort to bring Pope Francis to the Green Bay area is now underway.

Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt just launched the website popetogreenbay.com.

The site encourages people to sign a petition asking the pope to visit the area during a possible visit to the United States next year.

The petition specifically requests Pope Francis visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help in Champion.

In 2010, the Catholic Church validated an appearance by the Virgin Mary at the shrine back in the mid-1800s.

The Catholic Diocese of Green Bay has not extended its own invitation to the pope.

Bishop David Ricken, however, released the following statement Wednesday in regards to the mayor’s efforts:

“It would be wonderful if Pope Francis came to Green Bay. Let’s wait to hear how the Holy Father responds to the Mayor’s letter.”
