Passerby saves two people from Manitowoc duplex fire

MANITOWOC – A passerby saved two people from a duplex fire early Sunday morning in Manitowoc.

Manitowoc fire officials say a man was driving by a duplex on the corner of South 20th and Washington Streets around 4:20 when he noticed the fire and called 911.

The man then stopped and knocked on the doors of the three families living in the duplex and told them about the fire.

Fire officials 20 foot flames shot from the windows when they arrived on scene.

Crews attempted to put out the fire, but were also unsure if all of the people inside the duplex had been accounted for.

Firefighters did a search of the duplex and found no one else inside.

The house is considered a total loss.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

One firefighter was injured at the scene when he fell on the ice. He was treated and released from a local hospital.

The Red Cross is helping the displaced residents.

The City of Manitwoc fire department says the duplex did not have working smoke detectors.
