Green Bay Preble’s Will Daniels has accepted a scholarship offer to play football at Northern Illinois, starting next fall.
The senior picked Northern Illinois over a walk-on offer from Wisconsin. He also considered the University of South Dakota.
“Decision was very hard on me,” Daniels said. “I had to get past the fact that I’ve been a Badger fan all my life. NIU coaches showed so much interest, a lot more interest. I also received two academic scholarships from NIU to lessen the burden and I believe there is more opportunity there.”
Daniels played quarterback, defensive back and returned punts for the Hornets this past season. He was fifth in the Fox River Classic Conference with 1,303 passing yards, was third with 16 TD passes and added 720 rushing yards and 13 rushing TDs.
Furthermore, he averaged 18.4 yards per punt return for the Hornets who were 7-4 last season.
Daniels, who will play safety, said he was impressed by Northern Illinois’ persistence.
“The coaches came up to my house twice, called me countless times,” he said. “They tried and tried hard and showed they truly wanted me. You have to go somewhere you’re wanted, and NIU is that place for me. It’s a perfect fit.”
Northern Illinois was 12-2 this past season and has played in a bowl game the last six seasons.
Daniels will sign his national letter of intent on Thursday. He is the second area player to sign with Northern Illinois as Green Bay Southwest lineman Max Scharping also will ink with the Huskies.
