Walkers cross Lake Winnebago with goal to help animals

ICE WALKERS COMPLETE TRIP

HILBERT – Hundreds of people in the Fox Valley braved the elements Saturday to take part in a fundraiser walk across Lake Winnebago.

The roughly eight and half mile walk started out at Bobber’s Bar in Hilbert.

The group then crossed the frozen lake to Neenah.

Roughly 500 participants made it to the finish line Saturday afternoon.

The “Walk Across Lake Winnebago” is an annual event, but it wasn’t held the last couple of years because of poor ice conditions.

With the frigid cold we’ve experienced this winter, the ice today was in excellent shape.

Participants said it was chance to get out of the house and do something out of the ordinary.

“This is a chance to walk across Lake Winnebago, so we went ahead and did it, and it was a great time. I mean, what else are you going to do in Wisconsin in February, end of January?” said Jennifer Bellin of Sherwood.

The walk raised money for the Neenah Animal Shelter.

Half of this year’s proceeds will also be given to the City of Menasha K9 Unit.
